What's My Why?

Why do I do what I do?  One of the most important things to me in life is ensuring I have that enviable and much sought after work/life balance. Today that message is everywhere, reminding me that crucial to enjoying that balance is not only meeting the professional goals I set for myself and the businesses I work with, but most importantly, the personal ones – taking care of myself, being there for my family, spending time with friends and maintaining good health.  If you’re taking care of yourself, I believe the rest falls into place (likely not without a challenge or two, but that’s a good thing right!).

What I do gives me the opportunity to experience all these things. In my job, I love the diversity of working with so many different and interesting people and the variety of businesses and sectors that this involves. I love that there is always more to learn and I consider myself lucky to be working alongside the talented bunch of folk that I do. Here in New Zealand, it’s often we hear of great collaboration coming from having coffee with a person you know who can (or who knows someone, who knows someone who can) help or contribute to your business in some way?  I like to think of it as the “kiwi way of doing things”. Great place, great opportunities, great people.

Outside of work?  My ‘why’ is my family and friends. Contributing to the community we live in is really important to me and my family.  We love where we live and we love the people who live around us.  Being part of what I call ‘creating a family of friends’ for our kids, their friends and our friends matters hugely to me – providing them the kind of support and friendships across all ages that I feel lucky to have had growing up.

So, why do I do what I do? Ultimately, it’s because of relationships – the ones I have, the ones I’m building and the ones in the future. Both in business – and in life in general.
